The exact style of marking on steel hubshells varied over the years but say ” means march and the style of marking was fairly consistent from the mid ’80s until Much older hubs had no ‘-‘ and the markings were different in other ways too. In the Taiwan-made hubs there is a different date code type which is an ink-jetted four-digit code.

Template:Transmission types. Hub gears or internal-gear hubs are a type of gear system used on bicycles. Hub gears are used mostly on utility bikes and various types of small wheeled bicycle, such as folding bikes. Hub gears work by internal planetary or epicyclic gearing , which means that the outer case of the hub gear unit which is attached to the spokes is made to turn at a different speed relative to the rear wheel’s sprocket depending on which gear is selected.
In the United States and United Kingdom , hub gears are less common than derailleur gears which are the dominant gear system on most modern bicycles in these countries. In most of continental Europe, however, hub gear systems are more popular.
Sturmy Archer Classic 3-speed internal gear hub with gear ratio of %. 36 Spoke hole.
It is known in the art to provide three speed epicyclic gear hubs for bicycles by utilising planet gears engaged with a common gear ring and a sun gear fixed to the hub spindle. With this epicyclic system it is only possible to obtain direct drive plus one higher gear ratio and one lower gear ratio. It is also known in the art to provide five and seven speed epicyclic gear hubs for bicycles by utilising compound planet gears engaged with a common gear ring and each cooperable with a respective sun gear selectively engageable therewith in drive transmission mode.
The planet cages of the aforesaid arrangements are connectable with the hub shell, so as to provide a drive transmission from the planet cage to the hub shell according to hub condition, by means of radially or axially movable pawls mounted in the planet cage and cooperable with ratchet teeth provided in a hub end cap. The gear ring is connectable with the hub shell through radial pawls.
It is also known from EP 0 1 13 and EP 0 in the name of the applicants for a sun gear to be axially fixed with respect to the spindle and to provide a gear selector key movable axially of the spindle for selective engagement with a respective one of the sun gears so as to non- rotatably secure that sun gear to the spindle. It is also known from EP 0 A2 in the name of the applicants for a sun gear to be made non-rotatably secure to the hub spindle by using three balls disposed in respective holes in the hub spindle and a spool disposed for axial movement with respect to the spindle and operative, in one position, to displace the balls from a non-locking to a locking position in which the sun gear is non-rotatably locked with respect to the spindle.
With these sun gear locking means it is important that a sun gear is always locked to the spindle otherwise drive transmission will be lost. It is also important that only one sun gear is locked to the hub spindle at any one time, otherwise damage to the gear train could result. For this reason, the various sun gear selection means incorporate mechanisms for ensuring that at any time drive transmission is not lost or more than one sun pinion is locked to the spindle.

This is my oldest-numbered currently useable Special Sports frame, V My guess would be that the frame dates to around , based on some other Speedwell numbers I have seen. I carefully used some very fine steel wool, with oil, on the frame and fork, which removed most of the yellowed varnish and, like a restored old painting, the areas of white became clear again.
The process improved the colours, but I was extra careful around the decals on the forks and seat tube. Also, some paint schemes may look better with the varnish left as is. The main graphics are stencilled on with paint and are much more abrasion resistant than the decals. British Petroleum stickers in a couple of places, but they are now mostly worn away, and form part of its history!
The reality was much different, and since overhaul and re-building, it has not missed a shift and performs quite well, the shifts being slightly different to the AW, having a slower engagement and a slightly stronger spring tension. This was one of the last produced examples of the ill-fated SW c. The gear range is slightly wider than an AW, The saddle is a Bell model with double rails. The handle bars are not from a Speedwell, but do resemble the original upright bars of some Special Sports.

From Wikipedia the free encyclopedia. A hub gear , internal-gear hub , , internally geared hub or just gear hub is a gear ratio changing system commonly used on bicycles that is implemented with planetary or epicyclic gears. The gears and lubricants are sealed within the shell of the hub gear, in contrast with derailleur gears where the gears and mechanism are exposed to the elements. Changing the gear ratio was traditionally accomplished by a shift lever connected to the hub with a Bowden cable , and twist-grip style shifters have become common.
Hub gear systems generally have a long and largely maintenance-free life though some are not suitable for high-stress use in competitions or hilly, off-road conditions.

Sturmey-Archer is a manufacturing company originally from Nottingham , England. It primarily produces bicycle hub gears , brakes and a great many other sundry bicycle components, most prominently during their heyday as a subsidiary of the Raleigh Bicycle Company. In the past, it also manufactured motorcycle hubs, gearboxes and engines. All Sturmey-Archer gear hubs use epicyclic planetary geartrains of varying complexity. The AW is the simplest, using one set of planetary gears with four planets.
just bought a rusty 3 speed bike, and I don’t need another bike! Re Sturmey Archer date marks: since production resumed in ~ in Taiwan.
Thanks for this post, it is so clearly documented and photographed I’m inspired to start stripping one of my hubs! One question though, as the hub that most needs some attention is a Dynohub, I was wondering if you had any experience you could share relating to the risk of demagnetising the hub? Now how do we turn an AW3 into a 3SX? Having seen both of these hubs up close, it seems almost certain that the innards of the dynamo mechanism are identical, with the AWG also squeezing in a 3 speed gear mechanism too.
The instructions suggest that the dynamo mechanism can be removed as a single piece without demagnetisation being an issue. After that, the rest should be the same as the AW. Ian,I think this’ll be a slow burner, few will read this on the off chance they may want to service a hub in the future, but Google may lead them to it in the future if their hub is in need of some attention.
Great job, Chris — I found your photos really useful in my first attempt at fixing a broken AW. One note to other novice mechanics like me: when you’re putting the guts back into the hub shell, it’s probably best to hold the hub horizontally i. BG,You are correct, the low gear pawl pins don’t always fall out if they have a bit of grim holding them in place, but on a cleaner hub they would’ve fallen out if held in the same manner as I did in the pictures. Anonymous,I hope it went well.
