Studies that have examined the attitudes of college students have often found that certain attitudes change after completing a course in human sexuality. In the present study, it was hypothesized that in relationship to the control group, experimental subjects would become significantly more rejecting of date rape, more accepting of homosexuality and masturbation, and less anxious about sex. Significance was determined by a series of 2 x 2 x 2 Manovas condition, pre- or post, and gender , with the final criteria being the condition by pre-post interaction.

In regard to the primary hypotheses, none of the findings conclusions of earlier studies were replicated. Although there were significant pre-post changes within the experimental group, similar changes within the control group resulted in nonsignificant condition by pre-post interactions. The results of most earlier studies were based on significant pre-post changes in the experimental group and nonsignificant changes in the control group.

Thus, a salient issue was not addressed: In relationship to the amount of shift in the control group, did the experimental group change significantly more? Other hypotheses addressed attitude changes within “at risk” groups.

These scales measure attitudes toward use of psychological, physical, and sexual dating violence, respectively, by boys and by girls. Eight hundred twenty-three students from grades 7, 9, and 11 participated in the validation study. All six scales have good internal consistencies. As predicted, students were more accepting of girls’ use of violence than of boys’ use of violence, and boys were more accepting of violence than were girls.

The six scales were positively correlated with traditional attitudes toward gender roles and with each other, providing evidence for their construct validity. Higher scores on the AMDV Scales were related to boys’ past use of violence in dating relationships and to their having aggressive friends, supporting their criterion-related validity. Higher scores on the AFDV Scales were associated with girls’ past use of dating violence but not with their having aggressive friends, providing partial support for their criterion-related validity.

Singly or in combination, the Attitudes Towards Dating Violence Scales can be used to increase our understanding of the development and maintenance of violence-supportive attitudes in adolescents of all ages. By Saul McLeod , published However, attitudes are related to self-image and social acceptance. They may not well tell about their true attitudes, but answer in a way that they feel socially acceptable. Given this problem, various methods of measuring attitudes have been developed. However, all of them have limitations. In particular the different measures focus on different components of attitudes — cognitive, affective and behavioral — and as we know, these components do not necessarily coincide.

Dating violence – knowledge and attitudes of adolescents and evaluation of the effectiveness of a brief intervention in high school students. Nascer e Crescer [online]. ISSN The present study determined the prevalence of dating violence DV in a sample of adolescents from a high school in the northern region of Portugal and their knowledge and attitudes about DV, as well as the effectiveness of a brief intervention to empower adolescents to deal with DV.

This longitudinal, interventional study randomly selected adolescents from a high school and divided them into six groups. Three were subject to an intervention focusing DV. ADV survey was repeated by the intervention group after the intervention. A total of adolescents from regular and professional education were included. Sixty-nine adolescents participated in the intervention, with girls showing a non-significant decrease in sexual violence legitimacy perpetrated by females and boys showing a non-significant decrease in emotional violence legitimacy perpetrated by males. A high percentage of adolescents used abusive conflict resolution and severe violence strategies. Despite adolescents active participation during the intervention, its impact in decreasing legitimization of DV was lower than expected.

Validated with sex offenders, the new Garos Sexual Behavior Inventory GSBI is especially useful in forensic settings, where it can identify inmates with potentially deviant sexual interests and inform decisions about intervention and treatment. Yet the GSBI is sufficiently versatile that it can also be used in couples counseling to uncover differences in sexual values, feelings, and comfort levels—differences that may be causing conflict within a relationship.

In addition, the inventory is helpful with clinical groups known to have difficulty with sexuality: individuals with drug or alcohol problems, victims of sexual abuse, and those diagnosed with eating disorders. Composed of 70 items describing various sexual attitudes and behaviors, the GSBI includes both Main scales and Masking scales, as well as an Inconsistent Responding index:. Items on the Masking scales focus on relatively common sexual difficulties, while those on the Main scales ask about more atypical behaviors.

The former serve to obscure the latter, making them less obvious to the test taker and thereby reducing the potential for defensive responding. However, the Masking scales do have value in their own right. The information they provide is useful in couples therapy, personal development counseling, and other non-forensic applications. Appropriate for adults 18 years of age and older, the GSBI can be completed in just 20 to 30 minutes.

Items, written at a sixth-grade reading level, are easy to understand and answer.
